PROVIDENCE, RI — May 4, 2025
Amazon Prime Video has officially announced a new four-part documentary series chronicling the storied history and recent rise of Providence College’s basketball program. Titled “Friar Town: The Rise of Providence Basketball,” the series is set to premiere this fall and promises to take fans deep inside the culture, triumphs, and trials of the Friars’ journey to national relevance.
Produced in collaboration with Mandalay Sports Media and directed by Emmy-winner Ezra Edelman (O.J.: Made in America), the documentary will feature exclusive interviews with former and current players, coaches, and insiders—highlighting pivotal moments from the program’s early roots to its modern resurgence under head coach Kim English.
The first episode, “The Roots of the Friars,” dives into the legacy of legendary coach Dave Gavitt and the program’s Cinderella run to the 1987 Final Four. Later episodes will explore the gritty Big East battles, the leadership of Ed Cooley, and the emotional transition to the Kim English era.
In a statement, Amazon’s Head of Sports Documentaries, Sarah Martinez, said: “Providence basketball is more than a team—it’s a community and a tradition. This series will show what it means to be a Friar, on and off the court.”
Providence fans can also expect never-before-seen locker room footage, player mic’d-up segments, and behind-the-scenes looks at recruitment and training. The final episode will focus on the 2024-25 season, culminating in what fans hope is a deep NCAA Tournament run.
“Friar Town: The Rise of Providence Basketball” will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video starting October 10, 2025.
