The Boston Red Sox were at the front of the race to get superstar Alex Bregman a little while ago this offseason, but it seems more and more like it won’t happen. Fansided’s Chris Landers proposed three trade targets that could work as substitutes to getting Bregman, and would make sure not all fans lose trust in the Sox’ front office.
- Taylor Ward, LA Angels OF
This wouldn’t be the trade to solve the second base problem, but if the Sox want to give that position to Kristian Campbell, then it could very well work.
Last season, Ward hit 25 homers with splits of .246/.323/.426/.748. He is a little injury prone, but last season he managed to play in 156 games, so he might be over it.
- Michael King and Robert Suarez, San Diego Padres RHPs
This is more of a package than a single target. If the Sox can’t get a hitter, making their pitching top-of-the-line would be a close second. Michael King has already been an interesting target, and adding a stud reliever in Suarez would be elite as well.
Due to San Diego missing out on Sasaki, their hope of future contention is going down the drain. It seems like they may have to hit the button and blow up, and the Sox could take full advantage of that.
- Seiya Suzuki, Chicago Cubs OF
Suzuki is a quality bat and glove, but the Cubs might move him to full-time DH, which isn’t what he wants.
Hitting .283 with 21 homers last season, if the Sox could find a way to make him take a spot in the outfield, they would get what they thought they were getting with Masataka Yoshida.
Hopefully, the Sox get Bregman, but if they don’t, making one or two of these trades would save a lot of a face with fans.
