South Carolina Head Coach Reveals Alarming Reality of Fake Injuries Plaguing College Football

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer continues to voice his frustration over the uptick of fake injuries in college football.

The Gamecocks put together their best season (9-4) since 2017 in Beamer’s fourth season at the helm. The 27-3 blowout loss to Ole Miss, however, kept the program out of the College Football Playoff race and led to accusations of fake injuries.

Similarly to Beamer’s comments after that game, he recently revealed an alarming reality of how faking injuries is impacting the game for the worse.

“It absolutely does (impact the game),” Beamer said via On3’s Pete Nakos. “A team that we played this season — it’s amazing how many times they had an injury on defense after the opposing offense made a first down on an explosive play and had some momentum. There’s certainly something to that, and you have to be able to overcome it as a team.”

Head coach Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss were forced to address the accusations in a statement after beating the Gamecocks on Oct. 5. And SEC commissioner Greg Sankey later issued a memo to teams about the potential punishment for faking injuries.

“We’re not perfect, don’t get me wrong,” Beamer said. ” But certainly, that is what some people are using it for. One, to slow momentum, or two to catch their breath. If a team is going fast and they need a minute to catch their breath. It’s not what the sport intended for.”

The NCAA Football Rules Committee will meet in the last week of February in Indianapolis and is expected to assess the issue to which the American Football Coaches Association has proposed a solution.

The AFCA, which includes Beamer, seeks to establish a new rule that would require an injured player to sit out the rest of the possession after receiving medical attention.

The proposed rule would not include a player injured by a hit, or those on the field with helmet communications. And coaches would be allowed to keep a player in the game by using a timeout.

As it stands, the current rule requires players who go down on the field to miss one play.

Beamer continued to address the issue, calling some instances “absolutely embarrassing” for the game.

“There’s no question that it’s a bad look for everyone involved,” he said. “Look, there were some absolutely embarrassing, blatant faking of injuries that we saw this season. And it’s not what’s best for the game. There’s no question about it. The teams don’t want to see it. The fans don’t want to see it.”
