Very few shows are still operating in the pre-streaming era of releasing new seasons every year. Offhand, one is Hulu’s The Bear, the other is Apple TV+’s Slow Horses. And that trend appears to be continuing.
Slow Horses just had its season 4 finale last week, which lived up to all other past seasons, to be sure, but there’s news now that season 5 has already finished production. Yes, finished production in an era when many shows many not even start production for many months after a show has ended.
What this means for a Slow Horses season 5 release date is that it will likely be almost identical to what we’ve seen for four seasons so far. Spot the pattern:
- Slow Horses season 1 – April 2022
- Slow Horses season 2 – December 2022
- Slow Horses season 3 – November 2023
- Slow Horses season 4 – September 2024
Just…wild. This does not happen. The gap between seasons 1 and 2 was eight months. The gap between 2 and 3 was eleven months and the gap between seasons 3 and 4 was 10 months. And if production is already wrapped then yes, this should likely be under a year. If we’re saying maybe 10 months as on the high end of average, that would put us at August of 2025. We are looking at five seasons of a show in just over three years. That’s nuts.
And the show is excellent! Slow Horses is routinely heralded as one of the best series on TV, it has an overall 98% critic score and 90% audience score across four seasons now, and scored a Best Drama nomination at the Emmys, something it should probably win one of these days here.
The show is easily one of the best spy series we’ve ever seen on TV, and one that is on so often it feels like you can constantly keep going without these exceptionally long waits that we’ve normally seen. It boasts stellar talent like Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden, manages to be both hilarious and thrilling and is easy to recommend to essentially anyone. Its biggest problem may be that it’s on Apple TV+, a small fraction of the streaming space dominated by larger, and arguably worse, services, when Apple has some of the best series on all of TV, including this one.
So, we only have to wait probably 10-11 months for Slow Horses season 5, and likely
