In a heartfelt tribute to one of Finland’s most revered sporting icons, Netflix has announced the upcoming release of Set in Stone, a documentary chronicling the life and legacy of the legendary Finnish motorcycle racer Jaron Saarinen and his wife and longtime confidante, Soili Saarinen. The documentary, which blends archival footage, dramatized reenactments, and exclusive interviews, is slated for global release this autumn.
A Love Story Fueled by Speed and Spirit
Jaron Saarinen, often hailed as the “Flying Finn,” rose to international fame in the 1970s with his bold racing style, technical finesse, and unrelenting drive on the Grand Prix circuit. But behind the roaring engines and flashing cameras was a quieter, enduring story—his partnership with Soili Saarinen, who not only managed his career but also inspired a generation with her grace and strength.
Set in Stone explores their shared journey—from humble beginnings in Turku to international acclaim and the heartbreak that followed Jaron’s tragic death during a race in 1973. With narration from Soili herself, the film offers a deeply personal lens into their love, ambition, and the cost of greatness.
Public Movement for a Lasting Tribute
In tandem with the documentary’s buzz, a growing public movement in Finland has reignited calls for a permanent statue of Jaron Saarinen to be erected in his hometown of Turku. Advocates argue that such a monument would not only honor Saarinen’s contributions to motorsport but also serve as a symbol of perseverance and national pride.
“He was more than just a racer,” says Ilkka Niemi, a longtime fan and spokesperson for the Turku Statue Initiative. “Jaron represented the soul of Finnish grit and the beauty of chasing your dreams no matter the cost. It’s time we remember him in stone, not just in spirit.”
The campaign has gathered thousands of signatures, drawing support from celebrities, sports federations, and political figures. A public arts commission is currently reviewing potential designs and locations, with Turku Cathedral Square being the leading candidate.
Netflix’s Finnish Spotlight
This project marks a continued investment by Netflix in Nordic storytelling, following the success of series like Bordertown and Deadwind. Producers say Set in Stone is not just a sports documentary—it’s a portrait of resilience, partnership, and national identity.
Director Helena Mäkinen, known for her evocative work in historical documentaries, said in a statement: “The Saarinens’ story is as human as it is heroic. We wanted to capture not just the adrenaline of the race, but the quieter moments—the letters, the doubt, the sacrifices. This is a love story as much as it is a sports legacy.”
A Legacy That Won’t Fade
As anticipation builds for the film’s release, the memory of Jaron Saarinen is being reawakened in the hearts of new generations. Whether through the screen or in bronze, his legacy is racing forward once more—Set in Stone, and never forgotten.
Set in Stone premieres globally on Netflix this fall.
