The New York Yankees have already lost superstar outfielder Juan Soto.
He may not be the only player that New York ends up losing, though. Free agency clearly is in full swing and there are some former members of the Yankees available on the open market. Two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres arguably is the most intriguing former Yankee still available.
He’s just 28 years old and has four seasons of 24 or more home runs under his belt in seven years. Torres made $14 million in 2024 and there hasn’t been much chatter about a reunion between the two sides.
This doesn’t mean one isn’t possible, but it seems like he will be playing elsewhere. MLB.com’s Will Leitch predicted that his next landing spot will end up being the Seattle Mariners.
“The Mariners have to do something for their lineup,” Leitch said. “While Torres didn’t turn out to be the star the Yankees thought he was going to be when they traded Aroldis Chapman for him nearly a decade ago, he’s certainly an upgrade for the Mariners, who need every bat they can get.
“This is a big, if quixotic, advantage that the Mariners have this offseason: Their lineup was so feeble last year that even an average hitter — or above average, as Torres can certainly be — is a bigger improvement for them than it would be for anyone else.”
Torres can still provide some pop to a starting lineup and is just 28 years old. At this point, he seems extremely underrated. He’s going to help a team in 2025 and Seattle could be a good fit.
