Medicine Hat, Alberta – Streaming giant Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a brand-new sports documentary centered on one of Canadian junior hockey’s most storied franchises — the Medicine Hat Tigers. Titled “Stripes of Legacy: The Medicine Hat Tigers Story,” the documentary is set to premiere globally in Fall 2025.
The project is already generating excitement among hockey fans across Canada and beyond, as the Tigers’ legacy in the Western Hockey League (WHL) is both rich and dramatic — featuring championship runs, legendary alumni, fierce rivalries, and deep ties to the Medicine Hat community.
“This is a story not just about hockey, but about heart, heritage, and hometown pride,” said Netflix Sports executive producer Diane Taylor. “From the locker room to the rafters, the Medicine Hat Tigers represent everything we love about the game — grit, growth, and a relentless pursuit of greatness.”
The documentary, spanning six episodes, will feature behind-the-scenes footage from the current season, extensive archival clips, and emotional interviews with former and current players, coaches, families, and fans. Prominent names like Trevor Linden, Lanny McDonald, and Tommy McVie are expected to appear in the series, along with recent WHL stars.
According to producers, the series will chronicle key moments in the team’s 50+ year history — including their back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 1987 and 1988, the rise of NHL legends through the program, and the passionate fan base that packs Co-op Place every game night.
Filming began in early 2024 and has captured not only on-ice action but also community outreach programs, road trips across the Canadian Prairies, and candid moments that reveal the emotional toll and deep bonds within the team.
Veteran sports journalist Ron MacLean, who served as a consulting producer for the project, called the documentary “a love letter to Canadian junior hockey.”
“Medicine Hat is a small city with a big spirit, and the Tigers are at the heart of it,” said MacLean. “This series captures what that team means to the town, and to the nation’s hockey heritage.”
Local businesses and fans have embraced the film crew throughout the process, often appearing in crowd shots or offering personal stories of how the Tigers shaped their lives. From tearful tales of perseverance to joyful celebrations of underdog victories, the series aims to evoke the emotional heartbeat of the sport at the junior level.
Netflix says “Stripes of Legacy” will be available in over 100 countries with subtitles and dubs in several languages, introducing global audiences to the rich culture of Canadian junior hockey.
The release date is expected to be officially announced in August 2025, with a red-carpet premiere planned in Medicine Hat. Fans can also expect exclusive bonus footage and behind-the-scenes content to drop following the main release.
For now, anticipation builds — and for the people of Medicine Hat, the Tigers are about to take center stage on the world’s streaming screen.
