The Chicago Bears experienced significant internal turmoil during the 2025 NFL season, culminating in a player revolt that contributed to the mid-season firing of head coach Matt Eberflus.
Tensions peaked following a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Detroit Lions. In the game’s final moments, with the Bears trailing by three points and possessing a timeout, Eberflus chose not to stop the clock after quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked. This decision prevented a potential game-tying field goal attempt. In the locker room afterward, players, notably Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson, confronted Eberflus about the decision, leading to a heated and “ugly” scene. Players expressed frustration over repeated instances of poor time management and decision-making.
The loss to the Lions was the tipping point in a season marked by struggles. The Bears, under Eberflus, had endured a 14-game losing streak and faced criticism for their performance. Eberflus had previously attempted to foster team unity through “skull sessions,” where players shared personal stories to build camaraderie. However, these efforts were insufficient to overcome the team’s on-field challenges.
In response to the mounting pressure and internal discord, the Bears’ management made the unprecedented decision to fire Eberflus mid-season, a first in the franchise’s 104-year history. Thomas Brown was appointed as the interim head coach.
The season also took a toll on rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall draft pick. Despite throwing for 3,541 yards and 20 touchdowns, he was sacked 68 times and the team finished with a 5-12 record. Williams admitted to being mentally, physically, and spiritually exhausted, shedding tears after the season’s conclusion.
Looking ahead, the Bears aim to rebuild under new head coach Ben Johnson, formerly of the Detroit Lions. With strategic moves in free agency and holding key picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, including the No. 10 overall, the organization hopes to support Williams and steer the team toward a more successful future.
