Bakersfield, CA – May 12, 2025
In a remarkable act of generosity and a deep show of gratitude to his hometown, MLB All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes has announced a $35 million donation to combat homelessness in Bakersfield, California.
Burnes, who was born and raised in Bakersfield before rising to national stardom in Major League Baseball, said the contribution is part of his long-standing desire to give back to the community that shaped him.
“This city made me who I am,” Burnes said during a press conference at City Hall. “Bakersfield supported me through thick and thin, and it’s heartbreaking to see so many people struggling. This is my way of helping restore hope and dignity to those who need it most.”
The funds will be directed toward the creation of transitional housing, mental health services, job training programs, and addiction recovery support. The initiative, called “Homegrown Hope”, will be administered in partnership with local nonprofits, including the Bakersfield Homeless Center and the Housing Authority of Kern County.
Mayor Karen Goh praised Burnes’ commitment, calling the donation “transformational.”
“Corbin Burnes is not just a sports hero—he’s a true hometown hero,” said Goh. “His gift will impact thousands of lives and bring long-term solutions to one of our city’s most pressing challenges.”
Burnes, currently a standout pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, has earned multiple accolades in his career, including the 2021 National League Cy Young Award. But he emphasized that no victory on the field compares to helping his community thrive.
Local advocates say the donation couldn’t have come at a better time, with homelessness rates in Kern County having risen by more than 15% over the past two years.
Construction on the first phase of housing units is expected to begin later this year.
