“Willie Desjardins Donates $15.8 Million to Convert Historic Climax Home into Homeless Shelter”

In a heartfelt act of generosity and community spirit, hockey coach and former NHL bench boss Willie Desjardins has pledged $15.8 million to transform a historic house in his hometown of Climax, Saskatchewan, into a fully operational homeless shelter.
Desjardins, who grew up in the small prairie town, said the donation was inspired by a desire to “give back to the place that made me who I am.”
“I’ve been fortunate in life through hockey and the people I’ve met,” Desjardins said during a press conference outside the property. “This is about making sure that everyone, no matter their path, has a safe place to go.”
The house, a century-old structure once belonging to one of Climax’s founding families, had fallen into disrepair in recent years. With Desjardins’ contribution, it will undergo a complete restoration and be renamed “The Prairie Haven Shelter.” Plans include accommodations for up to 20 residents, a small clinic, job counseling services, and a community kitchen.
Local officials say this is the most significant private donation in the town’s history.
“It’s life-changing, not just for those who will live here, but for our whole community,” said Climax Mayor Janice Thompson. “Willie has always carried this town in his heart, and today he showed the world what that means.”
The shelter is expected to open in spring 2026, with partnerships already forming between Desjardins’ foundation, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services, and several local non-profits.
For Desjardins, the project is deeply personal.
“I’ve seen teammates, friends, and good people fall on hard times,” he said. “Everyone deserves dignity and a fresh start. If we can offer that in Climax, maybe others will be inspired to do the same in their communities.”
