Get ready to shout “Hey! Ho! Let’s go!” louder than ever — Netflix has just dropped a bombshell announcement that’s shaking the punk rock world to its core. The streaming giant is premiering The Ramones: Untold Story, a raw and revealing docuseries charting the rise, rage, and resilience of America’s first punk band. Set to debut globally on July 19, the series promises a punk-fueled plunge into the chaotic world behind the leather jackets, snarling guitars, and revolutionary sound.
⚡ From Queens to Kings of Punk
Told over six immersive episodes, Untold Story peels back the black shades to show the Ramones like never before — from their teenage beginnings in Forest Hills, Queens, to the explosive CBGB nights that ignited a punk revolution. Featuring never-before-heard demo tapes, gritty rehearsal footage, and lost interviews recovered from a 1980s vault in the East Village, this series is punk archaeology at its finest.
“There’s always been this image of the Ramones as cartoon punks with one-speed aggression,” says series director Carla Romero. “But their story is way more complicated — and way more human.”
🖤 The Untold Turmoil
The show doesn’t shy away from the tension and tragedy that haunted the band behind the scenes. From Johnny’s military-grade discipline clashing with Joey’s anxious chaos, to Dee Dee’s lifelong battles with addiction, to the band barely speaking in their final years — it’s a story of art forged in conflict.
One episode, “I Wanna Be Sedated,” dives into their relentless touring schedule: 2,263 shows over 22 years, with the band often sleeping on floors and fighting for airplay in a disco-drenched America. Another, “Poison Heart,” reveals the unexpected influence of poetry and politics in their deceptively simple lyrics.
📼 Punk Lives On
The series includes fresh interviews with punk legends like Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, and Henry Rollins, as well as current stars like Billie Joe Armstrong and Yungblud, who break down the Ramones’ DNA in modern music.
Romero also partnered with the Joey Ramone Foundation to incorporate pages from Joey’s private journals, showing a tender, philosophical side to the punk frontman never seen by fans.
📺 Stream and Scream
The Ramones: Untold Story lands on Netflix this summer — and with it comes a limited vinyl pressing, “Rocket to Ruin: Lost Takes & Live Cuts,” available exclusively to Netflix subscribers.
In the final moments of the series, a rare clip of Joey Ramone reflects on their legacy:
“Maybe we didn’t fit in, but we made the misfits feel like they belonged. That’s punk. That’s the Ramones.”
Brace yourself — the blitzkrieg is back.
