For the first time since the organization revealed on Thursday that it had suspended Udoka for the 2022–2023 NBA season for unidentified “violations of team policies,” Tatum was one of the Celtics players who made public statements on Monday. As they attempt to refocus for another attempt at a championship run following their loss to Golden State in the N.B.A. finals last season, the players have found Udoka’s absence and the covert nature of the inquiry into his wrongdoing to be concerning developments.
According to a person briefed on the situation who was not permitted to discuss it in public, Udoka had an inappropriate relationship with a female team member. One woman was implicated in Udoka’s transgressions, according to another briefed party.
Regarding our initial responses, Brown stated, “I believe we were all shocked at what was going on — a little confused.” “But I can’t really comment on it because a lot of the information wasn’t shared with us or with team members.”
The number of infractions was not disclosed by a Celtics representative.
The team’s main owner, Wyc Grousbeck, declined to provide further details about Udoka’s wrongdoing during a press conference last week, citing “privacy reasons.” According to Grousbeck, the Celtics decided to suspend Udoka following a months-long inquiry by a separate legal company.
Tatum, Brown, and Smart were among the team’s prominent players who said on Monday that they were unaware of the probe while it was underway. Indeed, according to Smart, Udoka had just paid him and a few teammates a visit in Los Angeles. When Smart was in California, he was asked if he saw anything out of the ordinary about Udoka’s actions.
