The Washington Huskies have landed a major recruiting coup, as one of the nation’s most highly sought-after college basketball forwards has officially committed to play for the program next season.
Elijah “EJ” Carter, a dynamic 6-foot-8 power forward from Oak Ridge Academy in Florida, announced his commitment via social media Friday morning, sending shockwaves through the college basketball landscape.
“After long talks with my family, coaches, and mentors, I’m proud to say I’m committing to the University of Washington,” Carter wrote in his announcement. “Seattle, let’s build something special.”
Carter, ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by major scouting outlets, had previously narrowed his list to Washington, Arizona, Texas, and Kansas. His decision to join the Huskies marks a massive win for head coach Danny Sprinkle, who continues to reshape the program with high-level talent.
A Big Addition
Carter is known for his explosive first step, mid-range scoring touch, and relentless rebounding. He averaged 22.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game as a senior, leading Oak Ridge to the Florida state semifinals and earning All-American honors along the way.
Multiple scouts described him as “college-ready” both physically and mentally.
“He plays with an edge, he defends all five positions, and he’s not afraid of the moment,” said one Pac-12 recruiting analyst. “This is a player who will make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.”
A Statement Move for the Huskies
Coach Sprinkle, now entering his second season at the helm in Seattle, has made recruiting versatility and toughness a priority. Carter fits that mold perfectly.
“We’re thrilled to welcome EJ to the Husky family,” Sprinkle said in a brief statement. “He brings energy, leadership, and a winning mentality. This is the kind of player who changes programs.”
Carter is expected to compete for a starting role right away, especially with the Huskies losing two starters to the NBA Draft and another to the transfer portal.
What’s Next?
With Carter now officially on board, Washington moves up to the No. 6-ranked recruiting class nationally for 2025. The Huskies are also reportedly still in the mix for 5-star guard Jamari Bennett from California, with Carter’s commitment potentially serving as a major draw.
In a brief message to Husky fans, Carter ended with confidence:
“I’m coming to win. Let’s shock the world.”
