LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2025 — Netflix has officially announced the global release of its much-anticipated sports documentary, “Unmatched: The Serena Williams Story,” which will premiere exclusively on the streaming platform on September 12, 2025.
Billed as one of the most comprehensive portrayals of a single athlete ever attempted, Unmatched promises to chronicle the life, career, and legacy of Serena Williams—from her humble beginnings in Compton, California, to her reign as the greatest tennis player of all time, and her transformation into a cultural icon.
A Documentary Years in the Making
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay, the documentary is a four-part series that includes never-before-seen footage from Serena’s childhood training sessions with her father Richard, exclusive behind-the-scenes moments during her 2017 Australian Open win while pregnant, and intimate interviews with her family, including Venus Williams, Alexis Ohanian, and their daughter Olympia.
In a statement, DuVernay said:
“Serena is not just a sports legend—she’s a force of nature. Telling her story, with all its complexity, grace, and power, has been one of the most inspiring projects I’ve ever worked on.”
