Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has announced a monumental $15.5 million donation aimed at addressing homelessness in both Canada and his native Dominican Republic.
The 26-year-old first baseman, who recently signed a record-breaking 14-year, $500 million contract extension with the Blue Jays, revealed the initiative during a press conference at Rogers Centre on Friday morning.
“This is not just about baseball,” Guerrero said. “I’ve been blessed with so much, and it’s important for me to give back—especially to the communities that raised me and now support me every day.”
The donation will be split between two charitable foundations: Safe Steps Canada, which provides transitional housing and job placement services in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal; and Fundación Esperanza, a nonprofit in Santo Domingo focused on sheltering and educating vulnerable youth.
Guerrero’s gift will fund the construction of three new homeless shelters, support mental health outreach teams, and expand access to vocational training programs. In total, the project is expected to directly assist more than 25,000 individuals over the next five years.
“It’s rare to see an athlete step up in such a massive way,” said Natalie Chen, director of Safe Steps. “Vlad’s compassion and commitment are going to change lives.”
Teammates and coaches praised Guerrero’s action, noting it reflects his leadership both on and off the field.
“He hits homers on the field, and this is a home run for humanity,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “This is who he is at heart.”
When asked if he hopes other athletes will follow his lead, Guerrero was humble.
“I just want to do what’s right,” he said. “If others are inspired, that’s a beautiful thing—but I’m just trying to be a good human.”
Construction on the first shelter in Toronto’s west end is expected to begin in July, with doors opening early next year. In the Dominican Republic, the first phase of Guerrero’s outreach center will break ground this fall.
