Dolomites, Italy – In a remarkable collaboration aimed at promoting cultural heritage and sustainable tourism, UNESCO and the Government of Italy have announced the launch of a special open tour of the Dolomites this June. This initiative marks a major milestone in public access to one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the Dolomites are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy, celebrated for their dramatic peaks, unique geological features, and stunning natural beauty. This June, for the first time, visitors will be able to take part in an officially organized and publicly accessible general tour, showcasing the region’s rich history, ecology, and cultural heritage.

A New Era of Sustainable Tourism

The planned open tour is part of a broader effort to promote responsible tourism in sensitive natural environments. Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, highlighted the significance of the initiative in a joint press conference with UNESCO representatives, stating, “The Dolomites are not only a natural treasure but a cultural one. This tour allows us to celebrate their legacy while ensuring we protect them for future generations.”

The program will include guided hikes, educational sessions, cultural events, and eco-friendly transportation to ensure minimal environmental impact. Local communities and businesses are also being integrated into the tour, offering authentic experiences in traditional cuisine, crafts, and alpine hospitality.

Why June?

June marks the start of the summer season in the Dolomites, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor exploration and the alpine flora is in full bloom. The timing also avoids the peak tourist traffic of July and August, providing a more serene and immersive experience for participants.

Open Access, Rich Experience

Unlike typical commercial tour packages, this initiative is designed to be inclusive and educational. UNESCO officials emphasized that the tour is open to the public, with accessible pricing and multilingual guides to welcome international visitors.

“We’re not just offering a tour — we’re offering a chance to connect with a living landscape that tells the story of our planet’s natural and cultural evolution,” said UNESCO spokesperson Maria Elena Rossi.

Registration and Participation

Registration for the June Dolomites tour is set to open later this month via official UNESCO and Italian tourism portals. Attendance will be limited to preserve the ecological balance of the region, and interested participants are encouraged to book early.

As global interest in sustainable travel continues to grow, this initiative is expected to draw significant attention from nature lovers, history buffs, and eco-conscious travelers around the world.
