May 7, 2025 – North Wilkesboro, NC – NASCAR has once again found itself in the crosshairs of drivers and fans after unveiling a controversial new rule for the 2025 All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway: the introduction of a “promoter’s caution.”
The rule grants officials the discretion to throw a caution flag at any point between laps 101 and 220 during the 250-lap, $1 million-to-win non-points event. NASCAR says the move is designed to “maximize entertainment and competitive balance,” but critics have already slammed it as a manufactured gimmick.
Leading the charge is three-time Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin, who didn’t hold back on the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast.
“It’s not much different than what we already have,” Hamlin quipped sarcastically. “If we’re going to script it, just give everyone a participation trophy and call it a day.”
Hamlin also took aim at NASCAR’s broader approach to the All-Star Race, having previously rejected a proposed “run what you brung” format due to projected team costs exceeding $2 million per car.
Social media erupted following the announcement, with fans on X (formerly Twitter) labeling the move a “circus act” and comparing it to WWE-style officiating. Some even echoed Kyle Busch’s past criticism of the event’s direction, arguing that constant tweaks have diluted its prestige.
NASCAR defended the decision, pointing to fan surveys indicating a desire for unpredictability and late-race drama. Still, Hamlin remained unconvinced, calling for simpler solutions like adjustable ride heights or eliminating unnecessary stages.
“We’re making changes to cover up the real problems,” Hamlin said. “It’s like painting over a cracked wall.”
Despite the backlash, NASCAR President Steve Phelps reiterated the organization’s commitment to experimentation. “The All-Star Race is a laboratory for innovation,” Phelps said in a statement. “We’re listening, learning, and adapting.”
With the All-Star Race just weeks away, all eyes are now on North Wilkesboro to see whether the “promoter’s caution” enhances the show—or fuels another round of frustration.
Meanwhile, Hamlin’s outspokenness continues to make him both a lightning rod and a leading voice in the garage, as NASCAR balances tradition, entertainment, and competition in its ever-evolving product.
