Providence, R.I. — May 5, 2025
The Providence Friars men’s basketball team will be without one of its key contributors for the next four games, as junior guard Malik Johnson has been sidelined with an unusual and unexpected injury: a fractured toe caused by an accidental collision with a hotel room minibar.
The incident occurred during the team’s recent road trip to face Seton Hall. According to team officials, Johnson stubbed his toe forcefully while attempting to retrieve a late-night snack from the minibar in his hotel room. Medical evaluation later confirmed a hairline fracture in his left big toe, which will require rest and minor treatment.
“It’s one of the strangest injuries we’ve dealt with, but it’s unfortunately very real,” head coach Ed Cooley commented. “Malik is a tough kid, and he’s frustrated, but we’re optimistic he’ll recover quickly.”
Johnson, who averages 12.3 points and 4.1 assists per game, has been a crucial part of the Friars’ backcourt. His absence comes at a critical stretch of the season, with Providence facing a demanding conference slate over the next two weeks.
Sophomore guard Trey Daniels is expected to step into the starting lineup in Johnson’s absence. “We’ve got confidence in our depth,” Cooley added. “It’s just another test of our resilience.”
Johnson is projected to return by the end of the month if his recovery stays on track. In the meantime, he’ll be on the sidelines, cheering his teammates on — albeit likely with a bit more caution around any nearby furniture.
