In a bold move blending sports history and cinematic storytelling, Netflix has announced the upcoming premiere of “Red Ice Rising”, a groundbreaking new documentary chronicling the legendary and historic background of the Washington Capitals. The limited series is slated for release on June 15, 2025, and promises to deliver a deep, emotionally charged look at one of the NHL’s most compelling franchises.
Directed by Emmy Award-winner Alex Roman and produced in collaboration with NHL Original Productions, Red Ice Rising will span over five episodes. The series takes fans through the Capitals’ inception in 1974, their rocky early years, and their transformation into one of hockey’s most formidable forces.
From the heartbreak of the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals to the euphoric 2018 championship run led by Alex Ovechkin, the documentary showcases iconic moments, personal stories, and never-before-seen footage. The film also highlights the team’s profound impact on Washington D.C., both culturally and socially, solidifying the Caps as more than just a sports team—they’re a symbol of perseverance.
“This is more than a hockey story,” Roman said in a press release. “It’s a story about grit, loyalty, and the bond between a team and its city. The Capitals’ journey mirrors that of Washington itself—resilient, passionate, and proud.”
Fan-favorite players including Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Rod Langway provide candid interviews, while archival material features late owner Abe Pollin and past stars like Peter Bondra and Olaf Kolzig.
Netflix has already teased a trailer featuring a sweeping shot of the Capitol Dome fading into a roaring Capital One Arena crowd, setting the tone for what could become one of the most memorable sports documentaries in recent years.
Fans of hockey, Washington D.C. history, and sports documentaries alike will not want to miss Red Ice Rising, premiering exclusively on Netflix this summer.
