Breaking: South Carolina Gamecocks to Welcome Legend George Rogers as He Pays Last Respect to Where It All Began

Columbia, SC – June 30, 2025

The stage is set for an emotional return as South Carolina prepares to welcome home one of its greatest legends. George Rogers — the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner, All-American icon, and forever Gamecock — is returning to Williams-Brice Stadium to pay his last respects to the place that made him a national treasure.

In a heartfelt statement released this morning, Rogers said: “Forever, Gamecock is my home. This is where I became a man, where I found my family, and where I learned to run — not just on the field, but through life.”

From his first explosive carry to his final game in garnet and black, George Rogers left everything on the field. His name still echoes in the halls of the program, etched in the record books and in the hearts of fans across generations.

The university has announced a special tribute ceremony to be held at halftime of the upcoming home opener, where Rogers will be honored at midfield — not as just a football hero, but as the heartbeat of Gamecock legacy. Former teammates, coaches, and fans from across the nation are expected to gather for what is being called “A Salute to 38.”

A statue may stand outside the stadium in his honor, but on this day, it is the man — humble, proud, and grateful — who returns.

George Rogers is coming home. One last time. One forever time.
