Los Angeles, CA — June 5, 2025
Tennis legend Steffi Graf has made headlines once again, not for her legendary forehand, but for her extraordinary generosity. In a heartfelt gesture to give back to a city that embraced her during her career and post-retirement life, Graf announced a $40 million donation to support programs aiding the homeless population of Los Angeles.
The donation, one of the largest of its kind from a former professional athlete, will go toward building transitional housing, mental health services, and job training programs across the city. Graf, who won 22 Grand Slam singles titles during her career, said the donation stems from her desire to “do something transformative for a problem that touches every corner of this city.”
“I’ve been fortunate in my life, and I believe in using that privilege to uplift others,” Graf said at a press conference at the downtown Union Rescue Mission. “Homelessness is not just a housing issue — it’s about dignity, opportunity, and community.”
Graf’s donation will be administered through her foundation, Children for Tomorrow, in partnership with local nonprofits such as The People Concern and LA Family Housing. A major portion of the funds is earmarked for the creation of “Hope Centers” — multipurpose facilities offering shelter, mental health care, addiction treatment, and educational resources.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass praised Graf’s contribution, calling it “a game-changing act of kindness that will save lives and inspire others to act.”
Graf, who has lived part-time in Southern California with husband Andre Agassi, has been quietly supporting various social causes for years. Her latest move puts her in the growing ranks of athletes who are using their platform for philanthropy long after their competitive careers have ended.
“We all need a safe place to land,” Graf said, “and I want to help build that for those who’ve been left behind.”
