Newcastle upon Tyne – May 28, 2025
In a stunning display of generosity and leadership, Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has announced that he is donating half of his annual salary—estimated at over £4 million—to fund housing and support services for the homeless across Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Brazilian midfielder, known for his passion on the pitch and humility off it, made the announcement at a surprise press event alongside local officials and the nonprofit group Northern Shelter Trust.
“Newcastle has given me a home and so much love,” Guimarães said. “Now, I want to make sure this city is a home for everyone, especially those who have been left behind.”
A Life-Changing Initiative
Guimarães’ donation will fund:
- The construction of 80 permanent housing units
- A new 24-hour emergency shelter in the city center
- Mental health and job training programs tailored to displaced individuals
- Monthly meal and hygiene kit distributions coordinated with local charities
The initiative, titled “Home Is Here,” is expected to launch within three months and is projected to directly assist over 1,500 individuals in its first year.
Community and Football World React
The city and footballing world have been quick to applaud Guimarães’ commitment. Newcastle United issued a statement praising their captain’s “exceptional character and dedication to the community.”
“Bruno isn’t just leading us on the pitch—he’s setting a gold standard off it,” said manager Eddie Howe. “His gesture is a powerful reminder of what it means to truly represent a club and a city.”
Fans gathered outside St. James’ Park to show their support, chanting “Bruno! Bruno!” and holding signs reading “Captain With A Cause.”
A Legacy Beyond Football
This latest act of kindness cements Guimarães’ legacy not only as a footballer but as a humanitarian. With his contract running through 2028, many now hope his influence will inspire others in the sport to follow suit.
“I wear this captain’s armband with pride,” Guimarães said. “But I hope my actions speak louder than any title. No one should be left without a roof or hope.”
