Wolverhampton, UK — May 18, 2025
In a heartfelt move to give back to the community that embraced him, Matheus Cunha, the Brazilian football star and Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, has donated $5.8 million to help fight homelessness across the United Kingdom.
Cunha, who has become a fan favorite at Molineux for his flair, passion, and work ethic, made the announcement via social media and during a community outreach event in Wolverhampton. He said the donation was his way of expressing deep appreciation for the unwavering support he’s received from fans and the broader UK football community.
“Football gave me everything, but the people here gave me belonging,” Cunha said. “This is about more than money — it’s about dignity, compassion, and opportunity.”
The donation will fund a new initiative called “Forward Together,” which will partner with UK charities such as Shelter, Crisis, and St. Mungo’s. The funds will support emergency accommodation, job placement programs, mental health services, and transitional housing across major cities including Birmingham, Manchester, and London.
The first phase of the initiative will focus on Wolverhampton, where Cunha will help open a new housing facility for families and young adults facing housing insecurity.
“Cunha’s generosity is a game-changer,” said Claire Donovan of Shelter UK. “He’s not just donating money — he’s getting involved personally. He’s visiting shelters, talking with people, and genuinely listening.”
Cunha also revealed that part of the funds will be used to create a community football program aimed at engaging homeless youth and helping them develop life skills through sport.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil praised his star forward, calling the gesture “a reflection of the kind of leader Cunha is — not just on the pitch, but off it as well.”
The announcement sparked a wave of praise across social media, with fans hailing Cunha not only for his performances on the field but for his compassion off it.
“Legend on and off the pitch. Proper Wolves spirit. 🧡🐺,” one fan tweeted.
Cunha, who has spoken publicly about growing up in modest conditions in Brazil, said he never forgot the importance of shelter, support, and second chances.
“Everyone deserves a roof over their head and hope in their heart,” he said. “This is just one way I can give a little of that back.”
As the Premier League season continues, Matheus Cunha is proving that his most meaningful impact might come far beyond the stadium.
